Essaouira, the historic city
Essaouira is a historic city whose heart is its ancient city also called medina and our boutique hotel is located at its entrance flush with the ramparts. Here is a brief overview of the main places to visit:
- The alleys, the doors of the medina and the port which are to be visited preferably during the return of the boats and the market at the auction.
- The door of the navy and the Skala of the port: The three crescents on the pediment of the door are the symbols of Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah (Founder of factual city). From the top of the square tower, you have a very beautiful view of the port, the bay of Essaouira and the medina.
- Place Mouiay Hassan is a large, lively square, with many café terraces.
- The Skala of the Kasbah and the North Bastion: The Skala is a long wall armed with twenty cannons from the 18th century, it offers a breathtaking view of the city and the open sea.
- Place Orson Welles: This place takes the name of the great director Orson Welles, who chose Essaouira, to shoot scenes from "Othello" film which was awarded with the gold palm of the Cannes Film Festival 1952.
- The slicer and the Clock: The Clock was offered by Lyautey to the city. The door adjoining it marks the entrance to the Kasbah, the oldest district of the city.
- The Kasbah was the residential district of the city's leaders. It was also occupied by consuls. The sultan had a house built for each of them: Spain, Denmark, Holland, Genoa, Germany and Portugal. He even had a workshop built in 1775 to mint coins.
- The Mellah: Former Jewish quarter, it included all the necessities: the synagogue, the school and the market.
- The Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum: The museum was created in 1981, it houses a large collection of ethnographic objects from the city and its region, ancient weapons, jewelry, musical instruments and marquetry.
